EMG & NCV Studies

(Electromyogram & Nerve Conduction Velocity)

If your orthopaedic physician suspects that your condition is a result of decreased nerve function, they may order an EMG and/or NCV to examine the integrity and functionality of your nerves. After the exam, a report is generated and sent to your orthopaedic physician who will go over the results with you at your next office visit.

Things to Remember

Please arrive at least 15 minutes prior to your appointment time. The entire test will last approximately 45-60 minutes.
Please confirm your appointment time and location on this flyer. Your EMG study may not be at the same location as where you were seen by the physician.
Loose-fitting clothing is best, however you may be asked to wear a gown depending on which nerves are being tested.
We ask that you refrain from applying lotions, oils, and/or moisturizers to your skin on the day of your EMG study. Otherwise, these items will need to be removed before your study begins.
There are no lasting side effects after the EMG test. There may be mild soreness where the electrode is placed, similar to a tiny pinprick; however, the sensation goes away quickly. You may apply ice to any sore spots when you get home. Most patients tolerate this test very well.
Please inform us if you are taking any blood thinners, such as Coumadin, aspirin, or Plavix, as mild bruising and bleeding may occur.
Please inform us if you have any electrical implants, such as a pacemaker or defibrillator, as this equipment might interfere with the EMG study.
