Course Description
This program focuses on evidence based practices for use of the latest technology and surgical procedures used to treat orthopaedic conditions and injuries associated with musculoskeletal trauma of the extensor tendon in the hand. Surgical techniques for repairing a torn extensor tendon will be presented and discussed in a live setting. It also includes an in-depth look at the pre and post patient preparation, surgical equipment and related anatomy for this procedure. In addition, postoperative management outcome expectations will be reviewed. Program content is designed to assist healthcare providers with acquiring the skills and knowledge to provide quality care, management and to improve patient outcomes with extensor tendon pathologies.
Educational Objectives
- Participants will be able to identify and discuss common extensor tendon pathologies in the hand and the related anatomy in patients that can be addressed with surgical measures.
- Participants will be able to discuss and describe operative techniques of the extensor tendon to address these pathologies.
- Participants will be able to identify surgical tools and equipment required for surgery to repair the extensor tendon.
- Participants will be able to describe the pre and post patient preparation and protocols required for this surgical procedure.
- Participants will be able implement and enhance clinical knowledge and skills of orthopaedic injury evaluation to improve patient outcomes.
The material covered in this webinar includes domains 2 and 4 of the BOC Role Delineation/Practice Analysis, 7th edition (Examination, Assessment and Diagnosis and Therapeutic Intervention). According to the education levels described by the Professional Development Committee of the NATA, the following continuing education course is considered to be Advanced Level to offer continuing education for Certified Athletic Trainers, Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants.

About Our Speaker
Michael D. Riggenbach, M.D.
Dr. Riggenbach joined Orlando Orthopaedic Center in 2012. He came to Orlando after spending the majority of his life in the midwest. He attended the University of Dayton where he majored in exercise science and worked as an assistant strength coach for the Dayton Flyers athletic department. It was there where he developed his interest of the musculoskeletal system. He graduated summa cum laude, and won several academic awards. He remained in Dayton, Ohio attending the Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University where he became involved with orthopaedic surgery.
Upon graduation from medical school, Dr. Riggenbach completed his residency at the Ohio State University Medical Center. His interest in hand surgery began during long nights in the emergency room, caring for patients with hand injuries. This interest propelled him into a hand/upper extremity fellowship at the University of Florida Department of Orthopaedics. He then traveled to Singapore where he spent time at the National University Hospital’s Department of Hand and Microsurgery where he gained an international perspective on hand and microsurgery and the components that make Singapore a top five healthcare system in the world.
Dr. Riggenbach specializes in operative and non-operative management of the hand, wrist, elbow, shoulder, nerves to the brachial plexus and extremities as well as microsurgery and hand surgery for children. He is a candidate member of the American Society for the Surgery of the Hand and a diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. He is on the volunteer faculty at the University of Central Florida School of Medicine and is the team physician for the East River HS Falcons.
