Educational Overview

Course Description

This program focuses on evidence based practices for use of the latest technology and surgical procedures used to treat orthopaedic conditions associated with musculoskeletal trauma of the elbow and forearm in pediatric patients. It includes a brief overview of the related anatomy, as well as rehabilitation considerations for non-operative treatment options and post-surgical therapy protocols. In addition, this course discusses how orthopaedic injuries of the upper extremity have been exacerbated during the COVID-19 pandemic which includes various cases and therapy management. Total joint replacements have been gradually migrating into the outpatient surgery setting, content will explain the drivers, economics, patient safety and rehabilitation challenges of this growing trend. The course will introduce prosthetic advancements and rehabilitation strategies for lower extremity amputees. Program content is designed to assist healthcare providers with acquiring the skills and knowledge to provide quality care and improve patient outcomes.

Discuss how total joint replacements have transitioned into the outpatient surgery setting including the economics, patient health and safety issues, patient satisfaction and rehabilitation challenges.
Discuss and describe the effects of COVID-19 on orthopaedic injuries of the upper extremity including the hand, wrist, elbow and shoulder.
Describe operative and non-operative treatments for pediatric fractures of the elbow and forearm.
Describe and implement rehabilitation strategies for non-operative treatment and post-surgical therapy protocols for pediatric elbow and forearm fractures.
Discuss and describe advancements in prosthetics for the management of lower extremity amputees.
Discuss and describe rehabilitation techniques and strategies for the lower extremity amputee.
Discuss and integrate current research findings related to orthopaedics to improve clinical practice, quality of care and patient outcomes.

The material covered by the 2021 17th Annual Orthopaedic Update Virtual Conference includes domains 2, 4 and 5 of the BOC Role Delineation/Practice Analysis, 7th edition (Examination, Assessment and Diagnosis, Therapeutic Intervention and Healthcare Administration and Professional Development). According to the education levels described by the Professional Development Committee of the NATA, the following continuing education course is considered to be Essential and/or Advanced Level to offer continuing education for Certified Athletic Trainers, Physical Therapists and Physical Therapist Assistants.

The AAFP has reviewed 2021 17 th Annual Orthopaedic Update Virtual Conference and deemed it acceptable for up to 4.5 In-Person, Live (could include online) AAFP Prescribed credit. Term of Approval is from 8/14/2021 to 8/14/2021. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
