Educational Summary
Course Description
This program focuses on evidence based practices for use of the latest technology and surgical procedures used to treat orthopaedic conditions associated with musculoskeletal trauma of the cervical spine, shoulder, thigh, and knee. It includes a brief overview of the related anatomy, as well as rehabilitation considerations for non-operative treatment options and post-surgical therapy protocols. Plus, the identification, evaluation, and management of upper extremity pain syndromes will be discussed. Program content is designed to assist healthcare providers with acquiring the skills and knowledge to provide quality care and improve patient outcomes.

After participating in this program, the participants should be able to:
- Identify basic anatomy of the cervical spine, shoulder, thigh, and knee.
- Identify and describe various types of orthopaedic injuries and conditions.
- Describe operative and non-operative treatments for musculoskeletal injuries to the cervical spine, shoulder, thigh, and knee.
- Describe and implement rehabilitation strategies for non-operative treatment and post-surgical therapy protocols for the cervical spine, shoulder, thigh, and knee.
- Identify the signs and symptoms in addition to implementation of evaluations techniques for complex regional pain syndrome.
- Implement treatment and rehabilitation techniques for complex regional pain syndrome.
- Implement and enhance clinical knowledge and skills of orthopaedic injury evaluation, prevention, rehabilitation, and management to improve patient outcomes.
- Discuss and integrate current research findings related to orthopaedics to improve clinical practice and quality of care.
The material covered by the 2017 13th Annual Orthopaedic Update for Allied Healthcare Professions includes domains 1, 2, 3 and 4 of the BOC Role Delineation/Practice Analysis, 6th edition (Injury/Illness Prevention and Wellness Protection, Clinical Evaluation and Diagnosis, Immediate and Emergency Care, Treatment and Rehabilitation). According to the education levels described by the Professional Development Committee of the NATA, the following continuing education course is considered to be Essential Level to offer continuing education for Certified Athletic Trainers.

Course Description
The purpose of this course is to present the current concepts on “the pain experience” regarding persistent low back pain. This session will overview the pathophysiology behind pain perception including peripheral and central mechanisms as well as psychosocial influences. We will explore how our understanding of pain can influence physical therapy practice, such as clinical decision making, restructuring language, and reframing interventions. Attendees will participate in team activities to practice implementation of pain neuroscience concepts to immediately integrate into real patient cases.
